Sarah Palin: Lisa's Tax Ad "Pretty Ridiculous"
Former Wasilla Mayor Takes to Airwaves, Touts Miller's Endorsement from National Taxpayers Union
Kenai, AK - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Miller announced that his campaign is airing a new radio message, with former Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin, repudiating a Lisa Murkowski campaign ad that falsely accuses Miller of changing his position on taxes.
"Right now, Mike's opponent is running a pretty ridiculous ad on taxes, and it has to be answered," Palin states in the ad. "Everyone knows Alaska's appointed Senator wanted a state income tax, and she tried to take our dividend for more government -- without a vote of the people. But what she doesn't tell you is that Mike Miller's plan will lower your taxes -- period. That's why the largest anti-tax group in the U.S., the National Taxpayers Union, has endorsed Mike Miller."
Palin stated she supports Miller because of his independence, and urged others to join her. "Let's send a message on Tuesday: Alaskans are independent, and now it's our turn to choose," said Palin. "When you vote, I hope you'll consider Mike Miller. He's the most experienced, he's a conservative we can trust, and I'm going to feel good about voting for Mike Miller this Tuesday."
Miller described Murkowski's latest attack ad as a "lame effort" to shift attention away from her own record. "Lisa has a dismal record on tax and spending issues, and she is trying to divert voter attention away from that," Miller said. "Because I support major reform of our convoluted tax system, Lisa makes the strange accusation that I no longer support President Bush's tax cuts. Is Lisa saying we cannot support positive changes to the existing system, even as we pursue a longer-term plan of replacing the current system with something better? Is this what passes for reasoning in the campaign of Alaska's appointed Senator? Meanwhile, Lisa remains silent about whether she supports any kind of comprehensive tax reform. This is something Alaska voters deserve to know."
Earlier this week National Taxpayers Union President John Berthoud said Miller is the clear choice for voters who want smaller government and lower taxes. "Mike Miller's promise to help lift the heavy burden of government off the backs of Alaska's families and businesses makes him the clear taxpayer's choice," said Berthoud.
