Tournament Raises Funds For Breast Cancer

Ketchikan, AK - More than $148,000 was raised during a breast cancer fundraiser sponsored by First Lady Nancy Murkowski at Waterfall Resort.

First Lady Murkowski began the annual event in 1994 as a way to raise funds for a mammography machine for the Breast Cancer Detection Center. The event has helped the center to construct a new building and has funded two small mobile mammography machines to help bring breast cancer prevention to Rural Alaska.

The weekend event lasted from Aug. 14-16 and included a fishing tournament and auction. It was attended by more than 60 people, including energy and business leaders and elected officials. A final tally of charity proceeds, which include auction figures and revenues from a fishing tournament, is not yet known.

Since the event began, First Lady Murkowski has raised nearly $3 million for breast cancer treatment and other health care issues.

"The detection center will take any woman who needs treatment. It has proven over these last 30 years to be an incredible investment in human life," Mrs. Murkowski said.
