Senator Lisa Murkowski: The Only Republican Candidate Practicing NRA Values Full Time
Miller to Murkowski: "You're Right, I've never had an Alaska hunting or fishing license"
Anchorage, AK - On the heels of weeks' worth of misfired attacks from Mike Miller that failed to find their mark on Lisa Murkowski's commitment to the 2nd Amendment, he finally admitted that he has never had a hunting or fishing license in the State of Alaska. The admission came during the Thursday taping of KAKM's candidate debate show "Running," to air on television this Saturday and Sunday.
During an exchange between Mike Miller and Senator Lisa Murkowski on her hard won NRA endorsement, Miller acknowledged that an exhaustive search of public records of Alaska hunting and fishing license holders shows that at least going as far back 1985 he has not had a hunting or fishing license.
Murkowski noted that, "earning the NRA endorsement is more than just voting to protect 2nd Amendment rights, it is about living the lifestyle that those rights represent. I am an avid hunter and fisherman. I have been one all my life. Alaska gun owners want to know the people making laws for them and defending their gun rights share their passion for the outdoors, including hunting and fishing."
"I thought 19 years was a long time to go without throwing a line in the water or hunting for the ducks in the fall that follow the tourists out of the state. But his admission that he has never had a hunting or fishing license must come as an even bigger shock to the more than 30,000 NRA members in Alaska and the 65,000 plus Alaskans who carry hunting and fishing licenses in their wallets every day," Murkowski said after the debate. She added, "Sharing the right values is important to those Alaskans, and that is why they are supporting my candidacy for the U.S. Senate."
Senator Murkowski earned her NRA endorsement through a strong voting record in the U.S. Senate. Her record in the Alaska House of Representatives is nearly as strong, including her votes to expand Alaska's concealed carry law (SB 294, 21st Legislature), on resolutions urging Congress to destroy records created during background checks on new gun purchases (HJR 9, 21st Legislature), and for her votes to stop frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers and dealers (HB 103, 21st Legislature).
Senator Murkowski also noted of Mike Miller's recent announcement about being endorsed by the Gun Owners of America, a small group in Springfield, Virginia, "their policy is to endorse challengers, they do not endorse incumbents." She added, "This is a group that endorsed Dave Cuddy over Ted Stevens in the 1996 Republican Primary, and I don't think any Alaska can call Ted Stevens anti-gun."
