Stevens Calls Knowles Ads Wrong And Unfair

Tells Press Lisa Worked to Increase Veterans' Care

Anchorage, AK - In the wake of misleading television ads accusing Senator Lisa Murkowski of voting against care for veterans, Senator Ted Stevens called a press conference to set the record straight.

The Knowles ad accuses Senator Murkowski of voting against veterans on eight votes in the U.S. Senate. Stevens, a World War II veteran, voted exactly the same way on seven of the eight votes (the eighth vote being a Veterans Affairs Committee vote that Stevens could not have voted on) and called the Knowles ad 'wrong' and 'unfair.' "[Senator Murkowski] voted with me. And no one is criticizing the way I voted but they are trying to make it look like the way she voted was against veterans. It is absolutely untrue and it's not proper. Theses ads would have you believe that we have cut the amount of money for veterans. We increased it," Stevens said......(FULL TEXT)


Conservators To The Rescue In The Aleutians

Next week a team of historic building conservators from San Francisco will begin repairs to five World War II bunkers at the Aleutian World War II National Historic Area on Mount Ballyhoo in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor. Congressional funding to rehabilitate the former US Army bunkers is through a grant from National Park Service to the Ounalashka Corporation. All of the bunkers are part of the Dutch Harbor Naval Operating Base National Historic Landmark and the Aleutian World War II National Historic Area, a park owned and operated by the Ounalashka Corporation in affiliation with the National Park Service. The Ounalashka Corporation is the Alaska Native Village Corporation for Unalaska, formed in 1973 under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971......(FULL TEXT)

Commissioner Troubled By The Expansion of Canadian Salmon Farms Near Alaska's Border

Juneau, AK - Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Commissioner Kevin C. Duffy expressed concern over the expansion of Canadian salmon farms in Northern British Columbia.

The Commissioner's remarks are in response to news that Panfish Canada and the Kitkatla First Nation received final approval to begin farming salmon at Anchor Anchorage, British Columbia. At approximately 42 miles south of the Alaska-Canada boundary line, this farm will be British Columbia's northernmost fish farm.
